Gold & Financial Resilience: How to Protect Yourself from the Unpredictable?

A gold shield acting as a protector against economic crises

Historically the worst economic storms have one thing in common: no one saw them coming. When the unpredictable changes the rules of the game overnight, the difference between protecting your wealth and losing it comes down to a single concept: financial resilience. And in that climate of uncertainty, gold emerges as the ultimate shield to safeguard your future.

Financial resilience doesn't mean knowing what the next crisis will be. It means being prepared to face it even when we don't yet know what form it will take. This distinction is fundamental when talking about gold.

As part of our wealth, gold's role isn't necessarily to bet on a crisis, anticipate a stock market crash, or replace stocks and bonds. Its strategic value lies in something different: its ability to strengthen our financial resilience before we know when or why it will be needed.

What Is Financial Resilience?

When the economy is growing and markets are functioning normally, protecting yourself against adverse scenarios may seem unnecessary. However, financial crises show that conditions can change quickly.

The problem is that some financial assets, such as bonds and stocks, which have traditionally been uncorrelated, start to behave similarly when uncertainty rises. The World Gold Council (WGC) notes that many assets become more correlated during periods of volatility, which reduces their ability to diversify a portfolio precisely when it's needed most.

Gold has historically shown the opposite behavior: its negative correlation with stocks and other risk assets tends to increase during extreme market sell-offs.

Gold: A Shield of Resilience

Recent history offers plenty of evidence. The WGC analyzed the performance of gold, global stocks, and U.S. Treasury bonds during some of the major episodes of systemic risk over the past quarter century. These include:

  • The bursting of the dot-com bubble in 2000–2001.

  • The September 11 attacks in 2001.

  • The 2007–2009 global financial crisis.

  • The two stages of the sovereign debt crisis in 2010 and 2011.

  • Brexit in 2016.

  • The COVID crisis in 2020.

  • The start of the post-COVID inflation crisis in 2022.

  • The U.S. trade and tariff war of 2025.

The pattern is significant: with a few exceptions, gold performed positively during these periods of systemic risk and helped reduce the overall losses of the portfolios analyzed.

Even extending the analysis back over the past 40 years, it is clear that gold acts as a protective asset during times of global crisis:

As shown above, one of the most compelling examples of financial resilience demonstrated by gold occurred during the 2008 global financial crisis. While equities, real estate, hedge funds, and numerous commodities lost value, gold surged 47.5% in US dollar terms between October 2007 and October 2008.

More recently, gold once again showcased this defensive capability during the sharp stock market correction of 2025: amid the trade and tariff war unleashed by the United States government, gold accumulated a 26.6% gain from January 2025 to the end of April of the same year, surpassing US $3,500 per ounce for the first time during that period.

The WGC estimates that trade concerns accounted for approximately 10% to 15% of the total gold price increase in 2025, driven by factors such as a weakening US dollar, rising geopolitical risk, and investment flows into gold

Protection Doesn't Mean Infallibility

The strength gold has shown in times of crisis doesn't make it infallible in the short term: its price is also subject to significant corrections. In 2026, after rising more than 60% in 2025 and reaching a peak of nearly US $5,500 per ounce in January, its price fell to around US $4,500 in March, a drop of roughly 18%.

This shows that gold won't always rise steadily. No asset offers that guarantee, and diversification doesn't eliminate the risk of loss either. What matters is understanding that:

i) corrections in the price of gold can be opportunities for those looking to add it to their investment strategy, and

ii) gold has historically behaved differently when other assets are suffering at the same time, a key trait for strengthening the financial resilience of your wealth.

Build the Shield Before the Storm

There is a paradox in risk management: when everything is working, protecting ourselves seems unnecessary, and when everyone recognizes the danger, it may already be too late to react. That's why financial resilience isn't about trying to guess when the next crisis will hit. It's about preparing for future crises that haven't arrived yet.

There's no way to know whether the next crisis will be triggered by inflation, public debt, geopolitical tensions, a global recession, or some event we haven't even considered.

That's exactly why diversifying our investment portfolio matters: including gold as a protection asset allows us be ready for the next crisis… the one we can't yet foresee.
